Rainy Sunday

So the weather didn't cooperate. It is a rainy overcast day in Boston. Although Maria went for a run anyway, I stuck with the trainer. Did 70 mins and 30 trainer miles. I don't mind too much not getting out but I know I need more outdoor miles to prepare for TFCE. Let's see what the week brings.

On the grill front, yesterday was a success and I have Home Depot to thank. Usually I end up lost, frustrated and confused at HD -the result of store size, unhelpful staff and a complete lack of DIY skills on my part. Yesterday was different. The staff were plentiful, friendly and helpful and seemed genuinely interested in helping customers. In fact, when it turned out the grill I wanted wouldn't fit in my car, the manager assisting me volunteered to take it home at no charge in his van. So a big thank you to Mark at HD in Waltham. It looks like HD is really getting their act together. Oh yeah, the steaks last night never tasted better.

Back in the groove

Did 75 minutes on the trainer this morning (watching season 4 of battlestar gallactica). This is the first time in a couple of weeks that I have exercised three days in a row. So, while I am feeling good about getting back in the groove, my body is definitely tired.

There is no question that consistency is important for exercise. When I miss a few days, it is much harder to get back on the bike. I am optimistic I won't feel that way tomorrow. If the weather stays nice, I may do an outdoor ride.

Off to home depot now to pick up a new grill. The old one has seen better days and I have grilled steak in mind for tonight. I think I earned it :-)

Finally got an hour in on the trainer tonight. It was tough after four days off the bike.

Where does the time go

It's Wednesday night and I have not been on the bike since Sunday. I feel the need to get on the bike but month three of each quarter is always tough as the intensity around closing business ramps up. It is hard to find time for exercise. Maybe I will get up early tomorrow!

On another note, NPR had a lengthy piece tonight about the scandal in the Catholic church in Ireland. I am horrifed by the stories of abuse there and apparently there is worse to come when the report on the Archdiocese of Dublin comes out next month. The church in Ireland has a lot to answer for!

My first blog

I start this blog with trepidation since the fact of writing it presumes (a) that I have something worth writing about and (b) that someone will read it - I have little confidence in either. Nonetheless, here I am.

The trigger for beginning this blog is a culmination of events that began last fall. That is when mid life crisis angst overcame self indulgent inertia and I decided I needed to lose weight and get fit. More correctly, that is when I took action since the deciding part happened once a week, every week for the previous three years.

Beginning in October (or "Q4" as I think of it), I stopped eating junk, started eating healthy foods and reduced portion sizes. Over the winter I lost 43 lbs and today I am at the top end of a healthy weight range for my height. My goal is to lose another 10lbs over the summer.

As my weight came down, I also started exercising. I set up my bike on an indoor trainer and started watching back episodes of Heroes, MI5, and Battlestar Galactica - hmm, what kind of fantasy land am I living in? One day in January I was boasting to my sister Paula about my weight loss and new found fitness. She caught me off guard when she challenged me to join her in running the New York marathon. Now, I can think of few things in life I enjoy less than running so, being the clever negotiator that I am, I countered with a bluff-calling challenge I knew she could not accept - "lets do a century ride instead", i texted. And this is where it all went wrong, she accepted.

To answer my sister's question, yes, it is 100 miles and, yes again, it is in 1 day. So, at the beginning of May we signed up for The Flattest Century in the East (TFCE) http://www.nbwclub.org/events/2009-TFCE/2009-TFCE.html. We persuaded some friends and family to join and our merry group is now 6.

Although I have been training consistently on the bike, it has mainly been indoors. Yesterday, I rode 51 miles through Bedford, Carlisle, Acton, and Concord. As I collapsed on the couch last night, I realized I have some work to do before TFCE on September 13th. I also realized I have an experince to blog about. Perhaps noone will read it but I think it will be therapeutic to write about, so here i go....

Day 1: Today is a rest day :-)
